The Skagit River swept silently in front of us, winding in from the North and stretching past the old metal bridge as we made our way out of the car. Peeking over the top of the adjacent wall, we noticed the simple outline of a river-side pathway leading to an open, paved courtyard. Tomorrow night it will be spilling over with people eager to catch the sounds of the Riverwalk Concert Series, but tonight it’s quiet basking in the last few hours of sunlight.
The antique shop that used to live here is now surrounded by the gates of a construction fence, promising the opening of a new craft brewery. Turning to the right, the Trumpeter Public House is nestled in a brick building across the way.
To the far east of the structure is a sliver of outdoor seating, with a shade pulled down to filter the sun. As you scan to the left, you’ll find a pop of color in a few stain-glass windows surrounding the gallery, a sandwich board of specials, and a door, smattered in rectangular glass windows.
We walked through to find the soft yellow light of candles and dimmed lamps balanced with the natural light of floor-to-ceiling windows along the North side of the restaurant. Stretching ahead of us were warm, cherrywood tables, seating four or more chairs. These surrounded a fully staged lounge area centered around the fireplace. There is a small collection of booths near the back, we chose the one closest to the windows, near a door that opened to the sidewalk.
It was really exciting to see a tap menu completely filled with local craft brews, as well as an extensive collection of bourbon, scotch, and whiskey. There are also gluten-free (GF) options for every item on the menu, including some GF beer so bring your whole crew!
After browsing both the food and drink menus we landed on our orders, placed them, and relaxed to the background music. It wasn’t too long before our food came out. It smelled so good I had to actively prevent my partner from digging in before I could snap a few pictures.
My choice was the parmesan-crusted Shepherd's Pie, cooked with sautéed beef, lamb, onions, carrots, and peas in a rich creamy gravy and mashed potato.
His was the 1/2lb Trumpeter Burger, grilled to medium, and topped with sautéed bourbon sweet onions, smoked gouda, lettuce, and tomato on a ciabatta roll.

The Trumpeter Public House opened its doors over 10 years ago at the end of Myrtle Street, just along the river’s edge. But the business’ historical influences come from more than just its looks. In fact, from what visual research I’ve been able to dig up, it may have been one of the earlier Mount Vernon areas to be developed.
This locally owned and operated business has been serving the community of Skagit for over 10 years and has been a staple element to the livelihood of the region. With that in mind, as we search for new ownership for both, the business then the building, we’re looking for someone who loves Skagit and Washington business and agriculture as much as the community surrounding.
Located at 416 Myrtle St. Mount Vernon, WA, the Trumpeter Public House is listed at $350,000. It’s pertinent that the business sells prior to the building. Both are listed at a total of $949,000.
